Year Six at Pear Tree Community Junior
Last Term at Pear Tree Year 6 had a great time! We have already had so many memorable experiences that we will take with us to our new schools; we know there will be many more to come!
In the first half term we were looking at what makes Derby a great place to live. As part of the topic we had a fantastic trip to Markeaton Park. We went on woodland walks, fed the ducks, explored the beautiful gardens and had a great time on the adventure playground. Even though the weather was wet, that didn't stop us from having a memorable experience!
During the second half term, we studied Kensuke's Kingdom. To bring the book to life we had a workshop with Jumping Clay who worked with us to make boats and an Island. We loved the practical activity and it really brought the story to life.
As part of our English work, we have been studying a book called Skellig (a must read by the way!) In order to enrich our learning, get a real life experience and to enhance our understanding of the text, Year 6 had a fantastic hands on experience with a range of owls. All the children were given the opportunity to hold the owls and watch some of their tricks. It was so exciting that even Mr Sharp couldn't resist!
Thirty children from year 6 were selected to go on a trip to Toyota. They had a fantastic time learning about engineering, teamwork, time-management and the importance of working hard at school to enter into the world of engineering. They got a tour of the site, build their own car, have lunch with engineers at Toyota as well enjoy some delicious refreshments! They were all presented with a goodie bag, lego set and certificate. They represented the school brilliantly and beat the record time for building a Toyota style lego car! I'm sure it was an experience that the children who went will never forget!
