Abbey Hill bikeathon

Members of staff, together with people from the local community, took part in a gruelling non-stop, 24-hour bike-a-thon at the beginning of April. They travelled a whopping 472,724 metres - the equivalent of 294 miles - which raised over £1,235. The money will fund a specialist reading programme and new books for our library.

Carrie McFall, part of our school team, organised the event and was well supported by lots of colleagues, past and present, who also took part – together with other members of the gym and local community. She said “As someone with ADHD, I’ve faced my own challenges with education, which drives my passion to help others. Alongside my role in school, I volunteer as a facilitator for ‘Empowering Parents, Empowering the Community’ through our local family hubs, and I run a fitness group called ‘Empowered’, helping people build confidence through strongman-style training. I approached Etham Yeates, owner of local gym CrossFit 17 and ex-marine PT, to support the idea - and together we created this challenge to give back and make a real difference.”

The money raised is funding BookMark, a charity reading scheme. BookMark extended its usual one term of support to two, in recognition of the team’s hard work. We are a BookMark partner school in its one-to-one reading scheme, allowing pupils to have professional reading sessions designed to boost skills, confidence and love for reading.

The remaining money from the event will help to replenish our library books - which is always welcomed by us all.

Etham Yates said “I was pleased to host this event at CrossFit17 to raise funds and awareness for a cause that is very close to me personally. Growing up, I experienced learning difficulties, and I still face those challenges today as a business owner. Looking back, I know that with more guidance and support at a younger age, things could have been very different. There’s a saying in the Royal Marines: ‘cheerfulness in the face of adversity’ which was evident throughout the event. When you look around and see others pushing through the same challenges, it reminds you that you’re not alone and that shared effort makes difficult moments far easier to overcome”.

Mr Jevons-Newman said “This wonderful fundraising event shows the power of true community – where a kind-hearted, driven group of people came together to channel their passion for fitness into something really valuable and supportive. I am so grateful to everyone who gave their time so generously. Our pupils will benefit greatly - and we are delighted with the support of BookMark and the additional reading resources we are receiving.”

Well done to everyone involved in the community bike-a-thon fundraiser!
