  • Leading with Heart: Transform Pupils Shape the Future of Collective Worship

On a bright March day, the historic setting of Southwell Minster became a hub of inspiration as pupils from 19 Transform Trust schools gathered for a Collective Worship Leadership Day. This special event gave children the opportunity not only to reflect on the meaning of worship, but to lead it—guided by our Trust values of Respect, Kindness, Creativity, and Equity.

From the moment they arrived, our pupils showed deep respect for the sacred space and for one another. As they explored the grandeur of the Minster—its stained-glass windows, textile art and peaceful gardens—they listened, learned and engaged with open minds. It was a day grounded in curiosity and reflection, where diverse experiences and perspectives were welcomed and celebrated.

Workshops in storytelling, symbols and drama invited children to approach worship with creativity. They imagined new ways to make it meaningful in their schools—through calming music, sensory focus areas, student-led prayers and even short drama or comedy sketches to bring key messages to life. Their ideas reflected an understanding that worship should be both thoughtful and joyful, with room for self-expression and connection.

Kindness shone throughout the day—not just in the prayers and reflections, but in the way pupils supported one another. Meeting peers from across the Trust, they shared ideas generously and built friendships through shared purpose. As one child put it when describing what they liked best about the day: “Meeting other school kids, the colours in the artwork, the Stations of the Cross.”

Back in their schools, the impact is already being felt. Pupil leaders are putting their ideas into action—welcoming others into worship with music, designing themed tables and guiding peers through stories and symbols that encourage deeper thinking. They’re fostering spaces where everyone belongs and every voice is valued—living out our commitment to equity.

The children also provided thoughtful feedback to help us improve future events—asking for more time in activities, more hands-on sessions, and yes, more biscuits! Their reflections were full of energy and purpose, showing just how much ownership they felt over their experience.

This event was a powerful reminder of what happens when young people are trusted to lead: they rise to the challenge with empathy, vision and courage. Guided by our shared values, they are shaping the future of collective worship—not as something done to them, but something they help create.

We’re incredibly proud of the way our pupils represented their schools and the Trust. Their leadership reflects the heart of who we are: a community rooted in respect, powered by kindness, inspired by creativity and driven by equity for all.
