Breadsall Hill Top Primary School in Derby leads an Act of Remembrance Service with special guest Sergeant Garry Murfin

Pupils and staff at Breadsall Hill Top Primary School marked this year’s Remembrance date 11th November with a colourful Act of Remembrance Service. Throughout the week every class was tasked with creating visual pieces such as paintings, poetry and handcrafted poppies which were on display across the school as they gathered together to pay their respects to those that gave their lives to make the world a better place.

Special guest, Sergeant Garry Murfin, a serving officer from the community was invited to the service. He arrived in military uniform, much to the pupil’s delight, spent time talking to the children and answering their questions. As a father of three children at the school, and an active member of the Breadsall Hill Top community, Garry is a familiar face to many but not typically in his military role.

The service began with The Exhortation, recited by Headteacher Mr Lawrence, followed by a recording of The Last Post just before 11am. As soon as the clock chimed 11am, the two-minute silence was observed by the whole school, with hands cupped and heads respectfully bowed. Reveille sounded at 11:02am and finally The Kohima Epitaph was recited:

When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

Azuraye Williams, Assistant Headteacher at Breadsall Hill Top Primary school added:
“Our children were a credit to our community, and showed their respect to our special guest and each other on this important day.  They channelled their creativity and produced some wonderful art and literature to bring the day to life. Considering some of their ages they sat still and actively listened to the service. It was incredibly generous of Sergeant Garry Murfin to share this special moment with the children as it really helps to widen their understanding. We try to make every aspect of our curriculum authentic and relevant, and Garry’s visit certainly did just that. It was a highlight for many of our children and staff. It was a really beautiful and moving service for our school community”
